Lydia's reputation as a
formidable fighter had spread through many of the eastern islands of the
Caribbean, so it was becoming more difficult to dupe young wealthy couples into
accepting the challenge of a fight with the Fighting Duchess. So Godfrey
and Lydia Northwood had to travel west to some of the less visited
islands seeking new opportunities. With funds running low they
arrived on the tiny island of Cupracost, which was owned by a one-time
explorer called Sir Michael Hartley.
While on his travels in the Pacific Sir Michael had met and married a
Polynesian woman who was reputed to be a formidable fighter. Soon
after arriving Godfrey approached Sir Michael with his usual proposition
of a wager on a fight between their two wives. The ex-explorer
accepted the wager, but only on the condition that each party lodged
their stake - 100 ducats in gold - with the local bank in advance.
This was a hard call for Godfrey and Lydia as that this was virtually
all the money they had, so if Lydia lost they would in effect be
bankrupt! Despite this risky proposal they agreed to the
condition. |
