| At age 19 each young Spartan woman was
required to enrol for one year in an Agoge (a sort of boot camp) where
they were trained in the military skills including unarmed combat. At
the end year a tournament was held to determine the best fighter of the
year. Each Agoge house (known as syssitia) sent their best fighter
to the competition. In this story we see the 4 best fighters of
the Agoge compete to be champion who then takes on the champion from the
