Helen has mixed feelings about the challenge. She
loves to tussle, and it is a long time since she has had a proper fight
with a capable opponent. On the other hand she knows she is out of
condition, and that her Amazon opponent will be fit, strong and skilful.
But whilst there is a danger that she might be injured, she longs for
anything that breaks the monotony of her life in this closed and
stifling city. Helen is no longer the young naive woman she was when she arrived in Troy 10 years before. Her love for Paris is long gone and she is trapped in a foreign city where she is universally despised for the suffering she has brought. As she looks out at the distant snow covered peaks her mind goes back to the halcyon days of her youth when she lived in Sparta under her father's roof. Helen's mind travels back to that day long ago when she had tussled with friend Xanthippe the day before her betrothal Menelaus. |
